How do you load film correctly in a Ricoh YF-20?

I bought a second-hand Ricoh YF-20 and loaded a roll of film, then closed the back and inserted two AA batteries. I heard the motor, but the film did not automatically wind to the first frame. Does this model auto-load film, or do I need to advance it manually? If so, what is the correct loading procedure?

On this camera the film does not auto advance to the first frame when you shut the back cover. Once the film is in you then have to use the shutter release button repeatedly to advance it until the frame counter reads 1.
Here is link to a page that has a link on it, at the bottom of the page, to download a PFD of the manual.
Watch this video It is in a foreign language but it shows the film loading process.
I know you said you looked at the user manual so i am not sure how you missed the instructions on loading the film.
A note for all who buy used cameras.
- All of this information was easily obtained by using the internet to search for Ricoh YF-20 manual. Whenever you buy a used camera the first thing you should do is search the internet for the manual and read it carefully.

The Ricoh YF-20 does not automatically advance the film to frame 1 just by closing the back. After loading the film and closing the camera, you need to press the shutter release repeatedly to advance the film until the frame counter reaches 1.
So the behavior you saw does not necessarily mean the motor or loading mechanism is faulty. First, confirm the film leader is inserted correctly and the film is seated properly, then close the back and use the shutter button to wind the film forward.
If the frame counter still does not reach 1 after repeated presses, then there may be a mechanical problem, but based on the answers provided, the main issue is likely the loading procedure rather than a defect.
It’s also a good idea to review the camera manual or a loading demonstration video for this specific model, since older compact film cameras often differ in how they start a roll.
