I’m trying to load a new roll of film into my Olympus OM-10. I’ve followed the instructions, but the film advance lever is locked and won’t pull. The frame counter shows “S.” Is this normal, or does it mean the film hasn’t been loaded correctly?

Pages 11-14 of the Olympus OM10 Instructions outlines how to load film into the camera. It sounds like the leader is not inserted into the takeup spool enough to move the film when you cocked the lever the first time (similar to the "No" illustration at the bottom of page 13. If the film doesn't engage the sprockets properly the shutter will not be reset and the film counter will not advance.

Also keep in mind that the battery must be installed in the camera for the shutter to function. Without releasing the shutter you won't be able to advance the film (this is a safety feature to prevent you from winding the film too far after each shot).

Yes—on the OM-10, the advance lever will lock if the shutter hasn’t been released. When loading film, that usually means one of two things:

  1. The film leader isn’t engaged properly in the take-up spool/sprockets, so advancing the lever didn’t actually cock the shutter.
  2. The battery isn’t installed or working. The OM-10 needs a battery for the shutter to fire, and if the shutter can’t release, you can’t advance the film.

Check that the film leader is inserted far enough into the take-up spool and that the sprocket holes are properly engaged. Then advance and release the shutter as described in the manual until the counter moves off “S.” If it stays on “S,” the film likely still isn’t catching.

So: a locked lever at “S” is not the normal ready-to-shoot state—it usually means the film has not been loaded correctly or the camera can’t fire because of the battery.
