Why did my Diana F+ 35mm adapter only give 18 frames and split/black images?

I’m using a Lomography Diana F+ with the 35mm film back/adapter. I loaded a 36-exposure 35mm roll and advanced the film after each shot, but the roll ended when my counter was only at 18. After developing, many frames were split in two and had black areas.
I thought I was following the frame index correctly, so I’m not sure what I did wrong. Is there a specific setting or loading/advance method for the Diana F+ 35mm back that would cause this? How can I avoid wasting frames next time?

I'll suggest,
- Check if you have set the N/P switch and using the mask correctly. N stands for normal and P stands for panoramic, which is essentially wider than the normal films. You will have spaces between films if you use P switch with normal mask.
- The 35mm back won't stop you advancing the film, and it doesn't have a number for each shoot on the counter. Make sure you don't over advance the film after shooting
- Check if you've reset the counter before start

Most likely the film was being advanced too far between shots.
On the Diana F+ 35mm setup, the film advance is not automatically indexed like a normal 35mm camera, so the frame counter won’t reliably give one number per exposure. If you advance too much each time, a 36-exposure roll can run out around 18 shots, and frame spacing problems can cause partial/split images and black gaps.
Also check these points:
- Make sure the N/P switch is set correctly.
- Use the matching mask for the format you want.
- If the camera is set to P (panoramic) while using the normal mask, you’ll get extra spacing between frames.
- Reset the counter before starting, but don’t rely on it as the exposure index.
To avoid this next time, use the correct mask and N/P setting, then advance only the minimum amount needed after each shot rather than a full extra wind.
