Nikon D5100 won’t power on after sitting unused for months

My Nikon D5100 was bought around 2012/2013. It worked the last time I used it to record video, but after sitting unused for about two months it no longer powers up normally. The rear display stays off and I can’t take photos or record video. When I switch it on, only the small green light comes on briefly as if it is accessing the SD card. I’ve already checked power by trying newly purchased batteries and a new charger. Does a D5100 fail from not being used for a while, and is there anything else to try before getting it repaired?

No—simply sitting unused for a couple of months should not make a Nikon D5100 stop working. The first thing to rule out is power: use a fully charged battery and confirm the charger is working correctly. Since you’ve already tried fresh batteries and a charger, the camera itself may have developed a fault.

The green access light suggests the camera is getting at least some power, but if the screen never comes on and it won’t shoot, that points to a problem beyond normal inactivity. At that stage, the practical next step is service/repair.

Before sending it in, you can try the obvious basics: remove and reinsert the battery and memory card, and test again with a known-good charged battery. If it still behaves the same way, it likely needs professional service.

It is supposed to always work. The battery is the first thing to check, try recharging it, but maybe you already have. If it does not turn on with a fresh battery, then it sounds like it needs service.
