What screw is on top of my tripod, and how do I make it usable with a DSLR?

I acquired a tripod that has only a mounting screw/stud on top, with no head attached. The screw appears to be a little wider than 1/2 inch. What is this mounting point likely for, and what do I need to add so I can use the tripod with a DSLR? Also, what kind of adapter would be needed to fit a common tripod head?

Basically they sell you either a incomplete tripod or you just need to buy a tripod head:

There are several options to choose from and some brands sell the tripods and heads as separate parts.

This is most likely a tripod with the head missing, or a tripod designed to have a head purchased separately. The top screw/stud is the mounting point for a tripod head, not usually something you attach the DSLR to directly.

To use it with a DSLR, you would typically buy a tripod head that matches the tripod’s mounting stud/thread. Common options include ball heads, pan/tilt heads, and video heads. Once the head is installed, the camera attaches to the head’s camera screw or quick-release plate.

If the thread size on the tripod and the head do not match, you may need a thread adapter, but first identify the tripod’s thread size and the head’s base thread specification.
