What tripod head thread size fits my monopod: 3/8" or 1/4"?

I want to replace the head on my monopod, possibly with a tilt head. The mounting screw on the monopod measures about 1 cm across, and I’m trying to work out whether that means it uses the common 3/8-inch thread size. I’m new to photography gear and I’m confused because tripod and head thread sizes are usually listed in inches. My camera is a Fujifilm X-T20. Will a 3/8-inch tilt head fit this monopod, and would I need an adapter to mount the camera?

Tripod threads are measured in diameter-threads/inch. The two most common sizes are 3/8”-16 and 1/4”-20.

Many tripods and tripod heads sport 3/8” while many cameras use 1/4”. If looking to attach your camera directly to the tripod, you’ll most likely need a 3/8” to 1/4” adapter.

These are super common in the US and can be found just about anywhere that carries hardware. Outside of the US, I’m not so sure about the hardware store but just about any decent photo equipment store should have them.

Yes—if the monopod stud is about 1 cm in diameter, it is most likely the common 3/8" tripod thread. The two standard photo thread sizes are 3/8"-16 and 1/4"-20.

In general:

  • monopods/tripods and many heads commonly use 3/8"
  • cameras usually use 1/4"

So a 3/8" tilt head is likely the correct fit for the monopod. Then the camera mounts to the head using the head’s camera screw, which is usually 1/4" for cameras like the Fujifilm X-T20.

If you ever want to attach the camera directly to a 3/8" mount, you would need a 3/8" to 1/4" adapter. These adapters are very common at photo stores.
