I’m using a 2GB SD card in a Canon IXUS 50 (Digital ELPH / SD400). When I try a 4GB card, the camera reports the card as “locked” even though the write-protect tab is not set and the card works in other devices. The camera also won’t let me format it in-camera.

What is the largest SD card this camera supports, and are there any specific formatting requirements?

According to this site the maximum size of cards for this camera is 2GB. So you should stay with this size. And I do not think there is option to use bigger SD cards.

And the best way to format the card is to do it in camera.

The Canon IXUS 50 / SD400 appears to support SD cards only up to 2GB. That matches the behavior you’re seeing: older cameras like this often do not support 4GB cards, even if the card works fine in other devices.

If the camera won’t recognize the card properly, the format option may be disabled, and errors such as “locked” can appear even when the write-protect switch is not the cause.

Best practice is to use a 2GB SD card and format it in the camera rather than on a computer. In short, a 4GB card is likely not supported by this model.
