Why does my Canon EOS 60D show a card error with a 32GB SanDisk microSDHC in an SD adapter?

My Canon EOS 60D (firmware 1.1.0) gives a "Card Error" when I use a SanDisk Mobile Ultra 32GB microSDHC Class 10 card in an SD adapter. The camera also says it cannot format the card.

I tried formatting the card in macOS with Disk Utility (FAT32/MBR and exFAT/GUID) and with SD Formatter, but the 60D still reports a card error. The card is readable and writable on my computer, and it also works in another older camera. Full-size SD cards I tested in the 60D work normally.

The lock switch on the adapter is in the unlocked position, and when locked the camera correctly reports that the card is locked.

What should I do next, and is a microSD card in an adapter a bad choice for this camera?

It's going to be an issue with the card and compatibility. Doing a quick Google search some people are having compatibility issues along a range of devices. (Including but not limited to the Samsung Galaxy SIII Micro SDHC 32GB Class 10 Card Problem)

A new firmware version 1.1.1 is now available for the 60D as of yesterday (06/19/12).

Even though SD card compatibility is not listed as a feature of the update, sometimes there are changes not listed in the changelog. I would do the update and then go from there.

Can you return it and get a different card? May I ask your reasons for getting a MicroSD for your 60D?

This points to a card or card/adapter compatibility problem, not a camera fault.

Your 60D works with other full-size SD cards, so the camera’s slot is likely fine. If the microSD card can’t be formatted reliably in the 60D and even Windows reports trouble formatting it, the card or adapter is likely defective or incompatible. A microSD in an SD adapter can work, but it adds another failure point and is generally less ideal than using a normal full-size SD/SDHC card in a DSLR.

Reasonable next steps:

  • Update the 60D firmware from 1.1.0 to 1.1.1.
  • Test with a different adapter if you have one.
  • If possible, return/exchange the microSD card.
  • Prefer a standard full-size SDHC/SDXC card for the 60D.

Given your later testing, replacement was the right solution: the original card was faulty.
