Can a Canon EOS 500D use a microSDHC card with an SD adapter?

I want to use a microSDHC card in a Canon EOS 500D by inserting it into a standard SD card adapter. I already tested a 64GB microSDXC card, but that was not compatible with the camera. Will a microSDHC card and adapter work in the 500D, and are there any performance or image quality drawbacks compared with a full-size SD card?

There is no reason I can think of that it wouldn't work. The cards are identical except for form factor. Pins/circuits/protocols are the same though. That said, unless you have a stock pile of SDHC cards lying around, it is generally cheaper to get fast full size cards than it is to get fast Micro cards. If the reason is to be able to transfer them to a Micro based device, then you may want to consider an Eye-fi card that could do it wirelessly.

Yes— a microSDHC card in a proper SD adapter should work in a Canon EOS 500D. microSDHC and full-size SDHC use the same interface and protocol; the main difference is the physical size, which the adapter handles.

There should be no image quality difference, since the card type does not affect the photo data itself. Performance should also be similar if the microSDHC card is rated similarly, though in practice many photographers prefer full-size SD cards because they are often easier to handle and can be a better value.

Your 64GB microSDXC card is a different issue: SDXC support is not the same as SDHC, and older cameras like the 500D may not support SDXC cards.
