Should you sign or label a framed photo print on display?

I’m displaying some of my photographs in a small local coffee shop and want to know the usual practice for identifying the work. Should a framed print be signed, labeled, or watermarked at all? If so, where is the best place to put that information? I’d prefer not to add a large visible watermark on the image itself because it feels distracting. Would it be better to sign the mat or back of the print and use a small card beside or below the frame for the title, artist name, and possibly contact details?

I would have thought that having a business card or similar discretely displayed below the print is a classy way to go about it.

For a coffee shop or similar casual display, the usual approach is to keep the image itself clean and use a small, minimal card next to the work with the title and your name. You can also include contact info or a price, but keep it discreet.
A large visible watermark or logo on the front is generally distracting and can pull attention away from the photograph. If you do sign the work, keep it subtle. Many photographers sign the mat rather than the image, or attach a business card to the back of the framed piece so your details stay with it.
If the print is part of a limited edition, you can also add an edition or print number.
So the most common, tasteful setup is:
- no prominent watermark on the image
- a small label beside the frame
- optional signature on the mat or back
- business card/contact details attached to the back
