My Nikon D5300 briefly showed the date/time setup screen for a couple of seconds, then the LCD went black. Now none of the buttons seem to respond. What could cause this, and what should I check first?

The clock setting should only appear if the internal battery is also dead.
This should recharge if you put a fully charged standard interchangeable battery in & leave it for two days.

The brief flicker implies your regular battery doesn't have charge, and has been either out of the camera body for a long period, or has been flat for a long period. Test if it holds charge after recharging; make sure it's not swollen.
The charger has a couple of simple indicator light modes to tell you if it's charging properly or if there's an error. See Troubleshooting Nikon battery charger problems

Also see Why am I required to input the date and time on D5100 after charging the battery? - I'm not certain if the 5300 uses the exact same internal battery.
This iFixit teardown makes me pretty sure it's not something I'd want to tackle myself.

This symptom often points to a power issue rather than a screen failure. If the camera briefly showed the date/time setup, the main battery may be too weak and the camera’s internal backup battery may also be discharged.

What to check:

  • Fully recharge the main battery and try again.
  • Verify the charger’s indicator lights show normal charging and not an error.
  • Inspect the battery and do not use it if it looks swollen.
  • If the battery has been flat for a long time, or removed from the camera for a long period, leave a fully charged battery in the camera for a day or two so the internal backup battery can recharge.

If the battery no longer holds a charge after recharging, it may need replacement. The brief startup followed by shutdown is consistent with insufficient power. If a known-good, fully charged battery still gives the same result, the camera may need service.
