Why does my Nikon 1 J1 show a black screen and record all-black photos with multiple lenses?

My Nikon 1 J1 was working normally, but now the rear screen appears completely black as if no light is reaching the sensor. The camera still recognizes when a lens is attached, and it will take a photo, but the image is entirely black. I tried removing and reattaching the lens, and once it briefly showed an image, but it was very blurry before going black again. I tested both my 10-30mm and 30-110mm lenses and saw the same behavior. What are the likely causes, and what should I try first?

My guess, without more info is that you have accidently changed your camera's mode to 'manual'. Press the 'Menu' button, then click 'Exposue Mode' using the control dial. Next choose 'P' for program mode and press the Menu button. The camera should now take pics normally. As an aside, the 10-30 lens has free update available to correct a focus problem if you eventually come across that problem.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
Start with the simplest check: make sure the camera hasn’t been switched into Manual exposure with settings that are effectively blocking all light. On the J1, set Exposure Mode back to P (Program) and test again.
If that doesn’t fix it, the next likely issue is poor communication between the lens and body. Remove the lens and carefully clean the electrical contacts on both the lens and camera mount, then reattach and test.
Because you see the problem with more than one lens, the issue may be with the camera body. However, Nikon 1 10-30mm lenses were known for a focus/mechanical problem and Nikon issued a service advisory for that lens, so if the issue appears with that lens in particular, check whether it is affected.
In short: 1) reset to Program mode, 2) clean lens/body contacts, 3) if the problem continues—especially across multiple lenses—the camera body likely needs service.
