Why is the LCD black when I try to take photos in Live View on a Canon 600D?

My Canon 600D was working normally, but now when I try to compose a still photo on the rear screen, the LCD stays black. The screen itself is on and shows the usual icons, and video mode still works. I mainly shoot in Manual mode. I already tried resetting settings and turning the camera off and on. What setting do I need to check to get the live image back on the LCD for still photos?

In order to use the rear LCD to compose pictures (as opposed to using the optical viewfinder), you must put your camera into "Live View" mode. On the 600D (and all other recent Canon SLRs), this is done by pressing the button marked with a camera icon and a red dot which is just to the right of the viewfinder:

It is worth noting that using the rear LCD rather than the optical viewfinder to compose pictures can remove some of the advantages of using an SLR - this question gives a good overview of the differences.

You likely just need to turn Live View back on for still photos. On the Canon 600D, the rear LCD will only show the live scene for photo shooting when Live View is enabled. Press the button next to the viewfinder marked with a camera icon and a red dot to switch into Live View.

If the screen shows icons but the image area is black in still-photo mode, that usually means Live View is off rather than the display being broken. The fact that video mode works also points to this being a setting/button issue, not a hardware fault.

For normal DSLR shooting, you can also compose through the optical viewfinder instead of the rear screen.
