Is there a one-leg camera support that’s lighter than a tripod?

I want a lighter, faster-to-use alternative to a tripod for my Nikon D5000. Ideally it would be a single-leg support that helps steady the camera and might also work as a hiking staff or walking stick. What is this type of support called, and are there hiking-oriented versions?

You may want to take a gander at the trekpod. It is a monopod and a hiking staff!

Yes — it’s called a monopod. A monopod is a single-leg camera support that’s much lighter and quicker to set up than a tripod, and it can help steady your camera for hiking or general shooting.
There are also hiking-staff versions, such as products designed to function as both a monopod and a walking stick.
Another very lightweight option is a string/tension support: a screw or bolt attaches to the camera’s tripod socket, with cord hanging to the ground. You step on the cord and pull the camera upward to create tension, which adds some stability. Commercial versions of this idea also exist.
So the main term to search for is monopod, and if you want dual use on hikes, look for a hiking staff monopod or walking stick monopod.
