I’m looking for the name of a camera support accessory that is not a tripod or monopod. I mean a short handheld rod or stick that attaches to the camera’s tripod socket and gives you extra grip/stability while shooting, similar to small supports sometimes used with compact cameras. What is this type of DSLR accessory usually called?

Are you talking about something similar to this. Basically a little stick that can attach to the mount that you can hold on to as an extra grip surface? Those fall under the category of rigs, which are support structures that are designed to be used against the body and not the ground. There are a wide variety of types available ranging from the basic stick type to shoulder mounts and the like. This is B&H's selection of stabilizers and rigs for DSLR.

The general term is usually a camera rig or stabilizer rig. For the simple stick-style version that attaches to the camera’s tripod mount and is held by hand, you could also describe it as a hand grip or camera support grip.

These are meant to add an extra gripping point and a bit more stability, rather than supporting the camera on the ground like a monopod or tripod. More elaborate versions include shoulder rigs and other body-supported stabilizers.

If you’re shopping, try searching for terms like DSLR rig, camera stabilizer rig, or camera hand grip.
