What monopod under $100 works well with a DSLR and 70-200mm lens, and can double as a hiking stick?

I’m looking for a monopod under $100 for a Canon XXXD/Rebel-class camera with a mid-size telephoto such as a 70-200mm. Good stability is important, and it would be a bonus if it could also be used as a hiking staff or walking stick. Are there any models worth considering in this price range? I’ve also heard of tripod designs that can break down into walking sticks—any information on that type of product would be helpful too.

I believe you're looking for something like the TrekPod. I picked one of these up a year or so ago, and I love it. As others have been quick to point out, it's no substitute for a real tripod, but it's a great hiking companion, IMO.

Yes—this is a realistic budget for a basic monopod that can support a DSLR with a 70-200mm, especially if you use the lens tripod collar.
From the community suggestions:
- Canon Monopod 100 was recommended as a strong budget option and specifically reported to work well with a 70-200mm-class lens. It was also noted to function well as a walking stick.
- Manfrotto 290 series monopod was suggested as another solid choice in this range.
- TrekPod was recommended if the hiking/walking-stick function is especially important.
In general, for this setup look for:
- adequate load support for a DSLR + telephoto
- comfortable height when extended
- compact folded size for carrying
- a wrist strap or grip if you’ll hike with it
- use with the lens collar rather than mounting a heavy telephoto by the camera body
A monopod improves support and reduces fatigue, but it is not a substitute for a tripod for maximum stability.
