How can I carry a DSLR with a heavy lens more securely while hiking?

I use a Nikon D80 with a fairly heavy lens, and when I’m walking or hiking for long periods the camera hangs awkwardly, bounces against my chest, and rubs enough to become uncomfortable. I’d like a way to keep the camera tighter to my body and more secure—ideally parallel to my side instead of swinging around. Are there recommended carrying methods, straps, holsters, belts, or vests that work well for this?

You can check BlackRapid R-Strap. As @jrista mentioned in his comment, you can Do It Yourself if you want.

Yes. A standard neck carry is often the least comfortable option for hiking, especially with a heavier lens.
A simple no-cost solution is to wear the strap cross-body over one shoulder, with the camera resting at your side instead of on your chest. Let the lens point downward, tuck it slightly behind your hip/waist, and use your arm or elbow to keep it from bouncing. This keeps the camera close to your body and still ready to lift quickly.
If you want a purpose-built option, sling-style straps such as the BlackRapid R-Strap are designed to carry the camera at your side more securely and comfortably than a neck strap.
Another option is a chest-mount system such as the Cotton Carrier vest, which holds the camera vertically and tight to your body, minimizing swing while walking.
So the main solutions are: cross-body strap technique, a dedicated sling strap, or a chest/vest carrier. Which is best depends on whether you want the cheapest fix, fastest access, or the most stability while hiking.
