Are there affordable sling shoulder straps for carrying a DSLR comfortably and securely?

I want a sling-style shoulder strap for a Canon T1i with a 15-85mm lens. My ideal strap would be comfortable for hours of walking, long enough to wear cross-body on the shoulder, keep the camera secure at my side or behind my back with the lens pointing down, and let me bring it up to shoot quickly. I’m looking for a budget option around $20 rather than a higher-priced SunSniper or BlackRapid. Are there lower-cost sling straps or DIY alternatives that are still reasonably secure?

You can get all the strapping and buckles and such from strapworks.com and then just get the swivel and tripod lock on amazon. It'll run you far cheaper than a whole strap from Black Rapid.

Yes. Budget sling straps do exist, and DIY is also an option.

From the community replies, common low-cost choices include generic “camera sling” straps sold on eBay and lower-priced “Quick Strap” style products, often around your target budget. They may not be as refined as premium brands like BlackRapid or SunSniper, but users reported they can work well.

If you go with a cheaper strap, pay close attention to the attachment hardware—especially the carabiner, swivel, and tripod-socket connector—since that’s the most likely weak point. If the included hardware looks questionable, replacing it with better parts is a good idea.

A DIY sling is another practical route: you can buy webbing, buckles, and hardware separately and build a custom strap for less than a branded system.

So the short answer is: yes, there are cheaper alternatives, but prioritize secure hardware and build quality over the absolute lowest price.
