I find the standard neck strap uncomfortable when walking around with a Canon 600D and a 70-200mm lens. I'm considering alternatives such as sling-style straps. What advantages do different straps offer when carrying heavier lenses, and what should I look for in a more comfortable option?

Almost every time the "what strap" question comes up, my answer will be the same. Try the Black Rapid strap. With the 70-200, the lens faces directly downward, allowing you to both stabilize the lens against motion as you walk, and keep it from hitting things.
I've carried that exact lens with my Black Rapid and it's so amazingly better than a stock camera strap, I've never gone back. In fact, I can't make a case to go back to a standard strap for any body/lens combination.

For a DSLR with a 70-200mm, many photographers prefer a sling-style strap over a standard neck strap. The main advantage is comfort and carrying position: instead of the camera hanging awkwardly from your neck, it rides at your side, which can feel much better over long periods.
A sling strap also tends to let a heavy lens hang facing downward. That helps in two practical ways: it reduces swinging while you walk, and it makes it easier to keep the lens from bumping into things. This can make a big difference with a larger telephoto zoom.
Based on the shared experience here, a BlackRapid-style strap is a strong option for this kind of setup. The key benefit isn’t just the brand, but the sling design and how it supports the weight of the camera/lens combination more naturally than a stock strap.
