Is a Canon Rebel T5 a good first DSLR, or should I choose a T5i/SL1 instead?

I currently shoot as a hobby on a Pixel XL and am considering my first DSLR. Since a good smartphone camera already produces strong results, I’m wondering whether a Canon Rebel T5 would still feel like a worthwhile step up, or if I should save a bit more for a better beginner DSLR. I’m new to interchangeable-lens cameras and want something suitable for learning the basics without quickly regretting the purchase.

Yes—the Canon Rebel T5 can still be a good first DSLR for learning, but several community members suggest stepping up slightly if possible. Models like the T5i or SL1 offer more features for not much more in many cases, such as a touchscreen, and the SL1 also adds a mic jack. Those extras can make the camera easier and more flexible to use as you learn.

If your goal is simply to start learning DSLR basics, a T5-class camera is enough. You can still grow your skills and it should retain value reasonably well if you later upgrade. But if your budget allows, a T5i or SL1 is likely the better long-term beginner choice because you get more capability without jumping to a pro body.

In short: the T5 is not a bad choice, but the T5i or SL1 is a more compelling first DSLR if you can stretch a bit.

Try researching the Canon Rebel SL1. It has features that the T5 wasn't made to match. (I.E Mic Jack, Touch screen). Although it is an older camera, you may want to consider it over the T5.
