How can I learn to use my Canon EOS Rebel XTi beyond Auto mode?

I inherited a Canon EOS Rebel XTi and have mostly used it in full Auto mode. I took a basic photography class years ago, but I never really applied that knowledge to a DSLR. I’d like to understand the fundamentals better—especially aperture, shutter speed, exposure, ISO/sensitivity, and focus—and start shooting in more creative modes instead of relying on Auto. Are there camera-specific tutorials for the Rebel XTi, or is it better to learn the general photography basics first? What’s a good way to start practicing with this camera?

Every camera works more or less the same. The most important, you already said it : Aperture, exposure, sensitivity, focus, etc. After you grasped enough of the theory, you may want to go out and try for yourself with your very own camera (whatever it is). Firstly, in aperture priority or time priority mode, you'll have less to care about yet enough to try and learn. Then, in fully manual.

You don’t need XTi-specific tutorials to get started. Most cameras work similarly, so the key is learning the core exposure and focus concepts: aperture, shutter speed, ISO/sensitivity, and focus.

A good progression is:

  1. Learn the basics of exposure and how aperture and shutter speed affect the look of an image.
  2. Start practicing in Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority mode rather than full Auto. These modes let you control one major setting while the camera handles the rest.
  3. Once you’re comfortable, move to full Manual mode for complete control.
  4. Practice regularly with your own camera—hands-on shooting is the best way to learn.

So, focus first on general photography tutorials and then apply that knowledge on your Rebel XTi. The camera model matters less than understanding the fundamentals and getting real shooting experience.
