Is the Canon EOS Rebel T6 a good beginner DSLR, and should I add an f/1.8 prime for portraits?

I’m considering buying a Canon EOS Rebel T6 as my first DSLR. I’ve previously used a Canon EOS 1200D and a Nikon D3300 borrowed from friends. Is the T6 a good choice for a beginner? Also, should I buy an f/1.8 prime lens at the same time if I want to shoot portraits, or start with the kit lens first?

The EOS Rebel T6 is a good option considering its low price. It is an entry level DSLR so if you are a beginner it should suit your needs.

Moreover given its low price you can afford to invest in a 1.8 prime lens to complement the kit one(if you are buying it). You will have to choose which focal length you want to have. The first 2 options that come in mind are the 35mm and the 50mm, if you want to shoot portraits the 50mm is obviously better.

Yes — the Canon EOS Rebel T6 is a reasonable beginner DSLR. It’s an entry-level camera, but that also makes it a practical, lower-cost way to get started and learn the basics.

If your budget allows, adding an f/1.8 prime lens is a good idea, especially for portraits. A fast prime can give you better background blur and stronger low-light performance than a typical kit lens.

The main choice is focal length:

  • 50mm f/1.8: the better option if portraits are your priority
  • 35mm f/1.8: more general-purpose and easier for everyday shooting

So if portrait work is one of your main goals, the T6 plus a 50mm f/1.8 makes good sense as a starter setup.
