My Canon PowerShot G5 X is not firing the built-in flash, even in very dark scenes. The flash appears to need to be opened manually, but pressing the button with the flash symbol does not release it. How is the onboard flash activated on this camera?

I can't figure out how to activate the flash...

Page 91 of your PowerShot G5 X manual explains that you activate the flash by lifting it up. Other cameras have a button or switch that you can use to release the flash, but on this model you just grasp the flash on the sides and swing it up into position. Once you've done that, you can access the flash settings screen with the ▶︎ button.

On the PowerShot G5 X, the built-in flash is raised manually. It does not pop up electronically with the flash button.

To use it:

  1. Grasp the flash at the sides and lift/swing it up into position.
  2. Once the flash is physically raised, use the camera’s flash settings controls to choose the desired flash mode.

If it still won’t open or the flash options seem unavailable, check for anything physically blocking the flash housing. In your case, a plastic cover on the flash mount was preventing it from opening and from enabling the flash functions.

So the key points are: the flash must be opened by hand, and any obstruction on the flash mount needs to be removed first.
