Why won’t the Nikon D3100 flash pop up automatically in low light?

On a Nikon D3100, the built-in flash does not always pop up in low light. In Auto and some Scene modes, the camera decides when flash is needed; in P, S, A, and M modes, the flash must be opened manually with the flash-release button. If the camera is taking longer exposures instead of using flash, and the flash also will not open manually, does that mean the flash mechanism may be faulty?

While in the Auto shooting mode it should automatically pop up. Try shifting the camera in to P mode and push the flash (lightning bolt) symbol on the side of the flash. If it still doesn't pop up when you do this, the release for the flash is damaged and you will need to get it repaired. It can often be a fairly simple repair, but involves taking the camera apart, so it's wise to have a service center do the repair, particularly if it is still in warranty.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
On the D3100, this can be normal depending on the mode. In Auto and some Scene modes, the camera only pops the flash up when it decides the light is low enough; before that, it may prefer a slower shutter speed, wider aperture, or higher ISO.
In P, S, A, and M modes, the built-in flash will not pop up automatically at all — you must open it manually with the flash-release button.
So first, check which shooting mode you are using. If you are in Auto, some delay in using flash can be normal. But if you press the flash-release button in P mode and the flash still does not open, that points to a mechanical/release problem rather than a setting. In that case, service or repair is the right next step, especially if the camera is under warranty.
