How do I restore normal shutter-button autofocus on a Canon EOS 50 film SLR?

I changed a Custom Function on my Canon EOS 50 (the 1995 film camera, not the 50D), and now autofocus is activated by the */CF button instead of a half-press of the shutter button. How can I turn that Custom Function off and return to the normal autofocus behavior?

It sounds like you've changed the value for custom function 4 to "1" instead of "0".

To change them, you should turn the command dial to CF, then turn the main dial to the relevant position, before pressing the */CF button to change the value -- then the */CF button should behave as exposure lock again in normal shooting.

You likely changed Custom Function 4 from its default setting. On the EOS 50, that function can reassign autofocus from the shutter half-press to the */CF button.

To restore normal operation:

  1. Turn the mode/command dial to CF.
  2. Use the main dial to select Custom Function 4.
  3. Press the */CF button to change its value back to 0 (the default).

With CF 4 set to 0, autofocus should return to the normal behavior: a half-press of the shutter button activates AF, and the */CF button goes back to its usual exposure-lock role.

If needed, check the camera manual’s Custom Functions section to confirm the setting numbers and defaults for your specific body.
