On my Nikon D7500, I used to be able to display the virtual horizon while shooting in Live View, but I thought the option had stopped working. The virtual horizon item in the menu appears disabled, and I also wasn't seeing the display change when trying to cycle screen options. How can I bring up the virtual horizon in Live View?

Turns out I miss took the "I" button on the right side of the back as the information button when there was literally a button labeled "Info" on the left side of the back. I was pressing the "I" button when I should have been pressing the "Info" button. Pressing the "Info" button brings up the horizon graphic to level the camera.
This solves the problem of getting the horizon graphic to show for insuring the camera is level. The horizon option in the menu system is still disabled but I don't need that as long as I can pull it up using the "Info" button on the left rear of the camera.

On the D7500, the virtual horizon in Live View is brought up with the dedicated Info button, not the i button. If you press Info on the left rear of the camera while in Live View, it cycles the display overlays and can show the horizon graphic for leveling the camera.
The confusion is easy because the i button opens a quick settings/options screen, while Info controls the shooting display overlays. So if nothing was changing, you were likely pressing i instead of Info.
If the menu item for virtual horizon is still grayed out, that doesn’t prevent using the Live View horizon display via the Info button.
