I have a 58mm solar filter and want to use it on my Nikon D3100 lenses. How can I tell what filter thread size each lens has, and when would I need a step-up ring? I also want to use the filter on a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR lens.

What step up ring adapter would I need?

Look at the front of the lens on your camera. There should be a mark like this: ⌀ Next to that, you'll find a measurement in millimeters, for example: ⌀ 52mm That indicates the diameter of the filter threads on your lens. If that diameter doesn't match the filter you want to use, like your solar filter, then you'll need an adapter ring with male threads that match your lens's filter diameter and female threads that match the filter you want to use.

It looks like your AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G VR has a 58mm filter diameter, so if your solar filter is also 58mm, then you don't need any adapter ring at all -- just line up the threads and gently screw the filter onto the front of the lens. If you're not sure how to do that, get a knowledgeable friend to show you.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.

Check the front of each lens for the filter thread symbol (⌀) followed by a size in millimeters, such as ⌀52mm or ⌀58mm. That number is the lens’s filter thread size.

If the lens thread size matches your filter size, no adapter is needed—just screw the 58mm filter gently onto the front of the lens.

If the lens has a smaller thread size than the filter, you need a step-up ring that matches both sizes: the ring’s lens side should match the lens thread, and the filter side should match the filter. For example, a 52mm lens using a 58mm filter would need a 52mm-to-58mm step-up ring.

According to the community answer, the Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR uses a 58mm filter thread, so a 58mm solar filter should fit directly with no adapter.

When mounting any filter, align the threads carefully and screw it on gently to avoid cross-threading.
