Can I use 58mm filters on Sony NEX-7 lenses that take 49mm filters?

I already own 58mm filters, but the Sony NEX-7 kit lenses use a 49mm filter thread. Can I adapt my 58mm filters to fit these lenses with a step-up ring? If so, which size ring do I need, and will using it affect image quality compared with buying 49mm versions of the same filters?

Yes a 49mm - 58mm step up ring is what you need. Here is one at BHPhotoVideo for example. And here are a bunch of results at amazon. I would also consider one of the kits that come with multiple step up rings such as this: http://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Anodized-49-52mm-52-55mm-55-58mm/dp/B001G445Q4/ref=pd_bxgy_p_text_y

Yes — use a 49mm-to-58mm step-up ring. It screws into the lens’s 49mm filter thread and lets you attach your 58mm filters.

Using a larger filter on a smaller lens generally should not affect image quality or cause vignetting, because the filter is wider than the lens opening. Assuming the filter itself is the same quality, a 58mm filter used with a step-up ring should perform the same as a 49mm version.

So if you already own good 58mm filters, a step-up ring is the practical choice. Buying 49mm filters would mainly be for convenience or a tidier look, not better image quality. If you may use filters on multiple lenses in the future, a step-up ring kit can also be useful.
