What step ring do I need to attach a 52mm slide duplicator to a 55mm Sony lens?

My Sony lenses have 55mm front filter threads. I bought a Polaroid slide duplicator that has a 52mm thread, and it also came with a 52mm-to-58mm ring. I’m confused about whether I should connect the duplicator directly to the lens with a 55mm-to-52mm step-down ring, or use the included 52mm-to-58mm ring and then add a 55mm-to-58mm step-up ring on the lens. Which setup is correct?

Your lens has a 55mm filter thread. You want to attach an accessory that has a 52mm thread. You need a 55-52 step-down ring.

Either setup can work.
- If you want to attach the duplicator directly to the 55mm lens, use a 55mm-to-52mm step-down ring.
- If you want to use the included 52mm-to-58mm ring on the duplicator, then you need a 55mm-to-58mm step-up ring on the lens.
So your two valid options are:
- 55-52 step-down ring directly to the duplicator
- 55-58 step-up ring plus the duplicator’s included 52-58 ring
A step-up ring is often the more versatile choice for general filter use, and step-down rings are more likely to cause vignetting in some situations. But for this specific attachment, either size combination is correct depending on whether you use the included ring.
