Can I mount a 58mm threaded accessory on a Nikon D80 with a 52mm filter thread?

I have a Nikon D80 with a 50mm lens that takes 52mm filters. I also have something marked 58mm with male threads, and I’m not sure whether it can attach to the camera or lens. Does the 52mm filter size affect which lenses fit the D80, and if this is a threaded accessory rather than an F-mount lens, what adapter would I need?

Your question is confusing because you do not say what your 58mm refers to.

If what you have is a Nikon-mount lens with 58mm focal-length then you have to replace the 50mm on the camera. This is what other answers are talking about.

What I suspect is that you do not have a real lens but an accessory optics (like a close-up diopter) and that one has a 58mm thread. Since your lens has a 52mm filter, what you need is a 52mm to 58mm step-up ring. This costs around $10 and replaces the haze filter, giving a 58mm thread to which you attach the accessory optic.

The 52mm marking is your lens’s filter-thread size, not the lens mount. It does not determine which interchangeable lenses fit the Nikon D80.

Your D80 uses the Nikon F mount, so actual camera lenses must be Nikon F-mount compatible and attach via the bayonet mount on the camera body—not by filter threads.

If your “58mm” item is actually a threaded front accessory (such as a close-up lens or other screw-on optic), then you would use a 52mm-to-58mm step-up ring. That ring attaches to your lens’s 52mm filter thread and provides a 58mm thread for the accessory. In that case, remove the haze filter first and attach the step-up ring to the lens instead.

So:

  • If it’s a real interchangeable lens: it must be Nikon F mount.
  • If it’s a 58mm threaded accessory: use a 52mm to 58mm step-up ring.
