I want to create a time-lapse on a Nikon D3300 but I do not have a separate intervalometer. Are there practical ways to trigger shots at regular intervals using other devices or software?

Yes. If you do not have a dedicated intervalometer, you can still shoot a time-lapse with a Nikon D3300 by using an external device to trigger the camera at set intervals.

Options mentioned by users include:

  • Connecting the camera to a computer over USB and controlling it with software such as gPhoto on a Unix-like system. A simple script can trigger exposures at precise intervals.
  • Connecting an Android phone to the camera with an OTG cable and using DSLRDashboard, which can control many camera functions and automate shooting.
  • Using a smartphone with an IR blaster plus a remote-control app, if your setup supports Nikon infrared triggering.

For best results, use a tripod, keep exposure and white balance consistent to avoid flicker, and plan your interval based on how fast the scene changes. In short: without a standalone intervalometer, a computer, compatible phone app, or IR remote app can serve the same purpose.

You can use your usb cable and connect your camera to the PC, and then use Shell script to shoot with. I used this to shoot HDR timelapse ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQFYTRffuPc&spfreload=10 : I was just playing around ). What you need is an unix like OS, then library like Gphoto, cable which came with your camera, tripod, and simple shell script where you tell camera to take photos at precise intervals, in this way you have complete control over your camera ( if it is supported, which I believe is ). If you like, I could post that script & tutorial on my webpage.
