I want to shoot time-lapse with a Canon PowerShot SX60 and I’m trying to find an intervalometer that will work with it. Does the SX60 support a cable intervalometer, or are there other practical ways to trigger shots at set intervals?

Two ways you might do this:

  1. According to PC World, a smart phone or tablet can control the camera. "You can zoom the lens, set the self-timer, control the flash output, and fire the shutter." If you can find (or write) an app to do this, you have a free intervalometer.

  2. CHDK (Canon Hack Development Kit) can be installed from memory card in a few minutes. This makes no permanent change to the camera firmware; the card can be removed and reformatted as needed. There is a tutorial for time lapse photography using CHDK.

So either way, this should cost you nothing to try.

Yes. The SX60 is reported to have a 2.5mm cable release port, so a cable intervalometer made for Canon DSLR bodies that use the same style remote connection should work. If you buy one, just confirm the plug type matches the camera.

If you’d rather avoid extra hardware, there are two other options mentioned:

  • Use Canon remote control from a smartphone or tablet, if the camera/app combination lets you trigger the shutter repeatedly.
  • Use CHDK (Canon Hack Development Kit), which can run from the memory card without permanently changing the camera firmware and is commonly used for time-lapse features.

So the practical choices are: a compatible Canon-style wired intervalometer, remote control via phone/tablet, or CHDK if supported for your camera.
