I have a wireless shutter remote for my Nikon D3000, but I want to trigger the shutter automatically at set intervals for time-lapse shooting. I haven't found an easy intervalometer option for this camera. Is there a practical way to do interval shooting with the D3000 without manually pressing the shutter each time?

By googling around the web I stumbled upon DIY Photo Bits' Camera Control. From version 3.0 and upwards it supports a time lapse feature.

According to the compatibility list the D3000 should work with this software on Windows 7 and Vista.

Yes. A practical option is to use a computer-based intervalometer setup, since the D3000 doesn’t make this especially easy with simple standalone accessories.

From the suggestions provided, two workable approaches are:

  • Use camera-control software that supports time-lapse/interval shooting. One example mentioned is DIY Photo Bits Camera Control, which reportedly supports the D3000 in later versions.
  • Use a DIY shutter-control cable connected through serial/USB, paired with software such as Stark Labs’ DSLR Shutter to trigger exposures at set intervals.

The tradeoff is that both methods require connecting the camera to a computer, so they’re better for stationary setups than portable shooting.

If you want automatic timed shooting on a D3000, computer control is the clearest solution mentioned here; otherwise, manual triggering with your remote is the fallback.
