Can a Nikon D3200 gain intervalometer support through replacement firmware?

I want to shoot time-lapse and also trigger photos automatically about every two seconds when the camera is mounted on a drone. The D5200 has a built-in interval timer, but my Nikon D3200 does not. Is there any replacement or third-party firmware that can add an intervalometer feature to the D3200, or is an external solution the only practical option?

Nope. You may want to follow this location for any 3rd party firmware updates for that feature besides any Nikon updates for that model. But in the meantime, your best bet is an external lightweight unit that can be taped to the drone. Here's one helpful guide.

Based on the available answer, no built-in or replacement firmware solution is known for adding an intervalometer to the Nikon D3200. If third-party firmware ever appears, it would need to come from the enthusiast community rather than Nikon, but there’s no established option cited here.

For practical use, the recommended approach is an external intervalometer/trigger unit. If your goal is taking a photo every two seconds for time-lapse or aerial work, an external remote timer is the realistic solution. For drone mounting, look for a lightweight trigger setup that can be secured to the camera rig.
