How can I open Olympus E-PL2 RAW files in Lightroom 3 on Windows?

I’m trying to import RAW files from an Olympus E-PL2 into Lightroom 3.3 on Windows. If Lightroom 3.3 can’t read them, what update is required? Also, if I just want to view the files in Windows Vista or Windows 7, why might the Olympus RAW codec still not show thumbnails correctly?

It is now supported in the LR3.4/ACR6.4 update.

Along with Canon EOS 600D (Rebel T3i / Kiss X5 Digital), Canon EOS 1100D (Rebel T3 / Kiss X50 Digital), Fuji FinePix S200 EXR, Fuji FinePix F550 EXR, Fuji FinePix HS20 EXR, Fuji FinePix X100, Hasselblad H4D-40, Kodak EasyShare Z990, Nikon D5100, Olympus E-PL1s, Olympus XZ-1.

Lightroom 3.3 does not support Olympus E-PL2 RAW files. Support was added in Lightroom 3.4, which corresponds to Adobe Camera Raw 6.4. So the fix is to update Lightroom to 3.4 or later; installing Camera Raw by itself does not update Lightroom’s RAW support.

For Windows thumbnail viewing, the Olympus codec may fail if:

  • the E-PL2 format isn’t supported by that codec version, or
  • you installed a 32-bit codec on a 64-bit version of Windows.

If Lightroom can’t be updated, a workaround mentioned by users is changing the EXIF camera ID to an E-PL1, though that’s not guaranteed to work perfectly. Other converters such as Capture One and Bibble were also reported to support the E-PL2, with trial versions available.

In short: update Lightroom to 3.4+ for proper RAW import; don’t rely on Adobe Camera Raw alone unless you’re using Photoshop.
