How can I view Canon CR2 thumbnails in Windows Explorer?

I want Windows Explorer to show thumbnails/previews for Canon CR2 RAW files. I already installed the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack, but it doesn’t seem to help, and I couldn’t find an obvious download on Canon’s site. Is there a Canon codec for this, or another way to enable CR2 thumbnails in Windows?

On the Canon website, look under 'software' rather than drivers. Download and install the Canon RAW Codec 1.11.0

Alternatively, you can try FastPictureViewer, which is a 3rd party codec pack that support lots of raw file types including Canon. It also supports PSD, which is nice as well if you use Photoshop. There is a trial version to try, otherwise its $10 (March 2015)

Yes. Canon has provided a Canon RAW Codec for viewing CR2 files in Windows Explorer; on Canon’s support site, check under the software section rather than drivers. According to the community answers, Canon RAW Codec 1.11.0 is the relevant download.

If you can’t get Canon’s codec or need broader RAW support, a third-party option is the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack, which supports many RAW formats including Canon CR2, and can also add support for files like PSD.

So your options are:

  1. Install Canon’s RAW codec from Canon’s software downloads.
  2. If that’s unavailable or doesn’t work for your setup, try a third-party codec pack such as FastPictureViewer.
