How can I make a Sony HX-series camera continue video file numbering instead of restarting at 0001?

My Sony HX-series compact camera recently reset the numbering for AVCHD video clips, while still photo numbering stayed normal. Because the camera started video filenames over from 0001, I now have collisions with older files when I copy footage to my computer. Since AVCHD uses its own folder structure, how can I get the camera to continue numbering from a higher value instead of starting over?

On Sony HX-series cameras, file numbering is typically based on the files already present in the recording folder. If the folder changes, numbering may restart at 0001; if the folder already contains files, the camera usually assigns the next number after the highest existing file.

What to try:

  • Use a freshly formatted card.
  • Create or select a new recording folder if your camera allows it.
  • Put files on the card in the relevant AVCHD folder using the same naming pattern as the camera’s video files.
  • The camera may then continue from the highest existing number.

A simple test is to add a few dummy files with the expected extension and sequential numbers, then record a clip and see whether the camera uses the next number.

Important: because AVCHD uses a specific folder structure, back up your card first and test carefully. If the camera changes to a new folder, numbering may restart again. There may not be a direct menu option to manually set the starting number; the practical workaround is to let the camera detect existing numbered files in the target folder.

How many numbers off are we talking? If you have 100 old videos, one way might be to create some dummy files to conflict with the current file number. I don't know the naming convention, but lets say DSCN0001.MTS, DSCN0002.MTS through DSCN0100.MTS. Place those on the SD card and then shoot a video. It should then bump up the counter to DSCN0101.MTS.

The dummy files just need be 1 byte text files renamed to *.MTS.

Do a test: if it currently has a sequence of 17, then create dummy files for 17, 18, 19, 20 and see if it doesn't create the next video at 21.
