I want to connect a Canon EOS 600D / Rebel T3i to a computer and control it remotely. Ideally I’d like to trigger shots from the computer and, if possible, set up interval shooting for time-lapse. What software options work for this?

Here is a link to a video series from Canon's Digital Learning Series that teaches about using the bundled software from Canon to shoot tethered to your PC. There is a section on automated interval sequencing.

Yes. The Canon EOS 600D / Rebel T3i can be controlled from a computer for tethered shooting, and interval shooting is possible with suitable software.

Based on the answers, your main options are:

  • Canon’s bundled EOS utility/software: Canon provides software for tethered shooting from a PC, and the linked Canon tutorial mentions automated interval sequencing.
  • digiCamControl: a free tethering application that supports both Canon and Nikon cameras.
  • DSLR Remote Pro: another option that has been used successfully, though it was noted as relatively expensive.

If you already have the Canon software that came with the camera, that’s the first thing to try. If you want a free alternative, digiCamControl is worth looking at. For more advanced paid control, DSLR Remote Pro is another possibility.

Make sure your camera is connected by USB and that the software specifically supports the 600D/T3i.
