I want to copy photos from the memory card used in a Canon EOS Rebel T3i / 600D straight to external storage, without using a computer. Is there a way to connect a hard drive directly to the camera, or do I need a standalone backup device with a card slot?

There are hard-drive enclosures and even DVD burners which run independently from a computer and have memory card slots to perform such copies.

Several manufacturers make such drives casings: Hyperdrive, Wolverine and Epson (Can't find the link) are the most popular.

All you do is insert the memory card into the device and with a few button presses, its contents get copied into the disk.

Not in the usual sense of plugging a standard external hard drive directly into the T3i/600D. For computer-free backup, the practical solution is a standalone photo storage/backup device with its own memory-card slot. These devices let you insert the SD card and copy the files to internal storage with a few button presses, without needing the camera or a computer. Similar standalone units have been sold by brands such as HyperDrive, Wolverine, and Epson. So yes, you can back up the photos without a computer—but typically by using a dedicated card-to-drive backup device rather than connecting a normal external HDD straight to the camera.
