How can I bulk import photos from a Canon camera to a Windows 7 PC?

I want to transfer a large number of photos directly from my Canon camera to a Windows 7 computer. When I try to import them through Windows, I get the error: "Cannot open multiple items from this location. Try selecting a single item instead." I also came across references to transfer modes like MTP/MTS and UMS, but I cannot find a way to change that on the camera. What is the simplest reliable way to bulk import and organize photos?

The easiest way to transfer photos in bulk (and in a fairly organized way) is to install the zoombrowser utility and/or camera window utility. These can be found here: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/digital_cameras/other_powershot/powershot_sx110_is_black#DriversAndSoftware
Using this you can specify a default drive/directory where all the photos are transferred. You can also specify the basic organization of photos (like store photos by month, date etc) If you do not want to connect the camera and use the SD card alone using a card reader, then the software provides a SD card utility.

A practical fix is to skip Windows’ built-in import for this camera connection and use Canon’s transfer software instead. Community answers recommend Canon ZoomBrowser and/or CameraWindow, which are designed to import photos in bulk from the camera or SD card and let you choose a destination folder and basic organization such as by date or month.
If you prefer not to connect the camera directly, using the SD card with a card reader is also a straightforward option. In general, card readers are often the simplest and most reliable way to copy many photos at once because the card appears like normal storage to the computer.
So the easiest path is:
- Install Canon’s import utility for your camera.
- Use it to transfer and organize the files.
- Or remove the SD card and use a card reader instead.
The MTP/UMS detail is usually less important than using the proper Canon utility or a card reader for bulk transfer.
