How do I get photos from an iPad into a Capture One catalog?

I imported photos onto my iPad with Apple’s Camera Connection Kit. Can Capture One import those images directly from the iPad, or do I need to transfer them to my computer first before adding them to a Capture One 7 catalog?

You would have to copy them off your iPad and onto a computer. The iPad won't function as a "camera" for this purpose and it won't attach as an external drive. However, once copied off the iPad, you can just import the files into Capture One normally.

Caveat, I don't use Capture One, so I'm not thoroughly familiar with their import functions. I do know that Lightroom, in contrast, will show import options for attached iPhone and iPad devices, so if you're not see something like that in Capture One, then the method I described is how I would do it.

Capture One generally won’t treat an iPad as a camera or mounted external drive for direct import. The practical workflow is to first copy the photos from the iPad onto your computer, then import those files into your Capture One catalog normally.

So the steps are:

  1. Transfer the images from the iPad to your computer.
  2. In Capture One, use the normal import process to add those files to your catalog.

If you don’t see the iPad appear as an import source in Capture One, that’s expected based on the community feedback. Some other apps may offer direct import from iOS devices, but for Capture One the reliable method is to move the files to the computer first.
