Does the Nikon 18-55mm kit lens zoom automatically or only focus automatically?

I bought a Nikon D5000 with an 18-55mm lens. The lens autofocus works, but I’m unsure about zooming. Is the zoom supposed to happen automatically, or do I need to turn the zoom ring manually?

No, the lens does not zoom automatically.
Almost all SLR zoom lenses are zoomed using the zoom ring, very few have a motorized zoom mechanism.

The zoom is manual. On a Nikon 18-55mm kit lens, autofocus is motor-driven, but changing focal length from 18mm to 55mm is done by turning the zoom ring yourself.
That’s normal for DSLR lenses. Most SLR/DSLR zoom lenses do not have motorized zoom, because manual zoom gives better control and keeps the lens simpler, lighter, and less prone to failure.
