I’m using a Nikon D3100 with a Nikon AF-S DX VR telephoto zoom and autofocus works normally. I’d also like to focus manually at times, but there doesn’t seem to be a traditional focus ring. How do you switch this lens to manual focus, and which part of the lens do you turn to focus?

Yes — manual focus is possible on this AF-S DX zoom. Set the focus switch on the lens barrel to MF. Then focus by rotating the front-most section of the lens barrel. In AF mode, the camera/lens handles focus automatically; in MF mode, you turn that front section yourself to adjust focus.
