I repaired the bayonet mount on my Nikon 55-200mm DX autofocus lens. After reassembly, autofocus seems normal, but when I switch to manual focus the focus ring is still locked and won’t turn. What likely went wrong, and is there anything I should check?

Sounds like the release from the AF motor is not functioning. I would recommend having it serviced by Nikon.

The most likely issue is that the autofocus drive disengagement is not working after reassembly. On lenses like this, the manual focus ring can stay locked if the AF mechanism is still engaged, which can happen if an internal linkage or release was disturbed during the repair.

Given that the bayonet area was disassembled, the safest recommendation is to have the lens professionally serviced, ideally by Nikon or a qualified repair technician. Forcing the focus ring could damage the focus mechanism further.
