Why does my Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 autofocus but the manual focus ring won't turn?

I recently acquired an older Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 in Canon mount. Autofocus works normally, but when I switch to manual focus the focus ring will not turn at all. What could cause this, and is it likely repairable?

Most likely the linkage between the focus ring and the focus elements is damaged. The link to the AF motors is likely fine. It should be possible to repair, but it would largely depend on if parts are available. The best bet would probably be to contact Sigma and see if they still have parts. You may have to send the lens in to get it serviced though.

The most likely cause is a failure in the manual-focus linkage between the focus ring and the internal focusing mechanism. Since autofocus still works, the AF motor side is probably functioning, but the parts that let the ring drive the focus group may be jammed, disconnected, or broken.
It may be repairable, but the key issue is parts availability—especially for an older lens. Your best next step is to contact Sigma service and ask whether they still support that specific version and have replacement parts. They may require you to send the lens in for inspection and repair.
Avoid forcing the ring, as that could cause more damage.
