Why did manual focus stop working on my Canon EOS Rebel SL1 kit lens?

I’m using a Canon EOS Rebel SL1 with the 18-55mm kit lens. Autofocus still works normally, but when I switch to manual focus and turn the focus ring, the focus does not change. This started happening suddenly after manual focus had been working before. Is there anything I should check before sending the camera or lens in for repair?

The current standard kit lens with the SL1 appears to be the STM version which means, among other things, that the camera has to be powered on and ready to shoot (not sleeping) for manual focus to respond. Essentially it's a "focus-by-wire" system, where there isn't a direct physical connection between the focus ring and the actual lens elements, instead the focus ring controls the stepping motor that moves things back and forth to focus the image. If that is the version you've got, then I'd try a couple things to debug the problem.

First I'd make sure that the camera is on and not asleep (push shutter button part way to wake it up). Then if it's still not working, try the same lens on a different Canon camera (any crop sensor DSLR, such as any of the rebels, should work.) If it still doesn't work, then there may be some problem with the lens. If it does work, there may be some problem with the camera body. Either way, you'd need to take it to a professional to get it evaluated/fixed.

If it's not an STM, and you're sure you've got the focus switch on the lens set to manual, and if it's not working, again you'd need to take it to a professional.

If your 18-55mm is the STM kit lens, this is likely due to how STM manual focus works. STM lenses often use focus-by-wire, so the focus ring does not mechanically move the lens elements. Instead, it sends an electronic command to the focus motor.

That means manual focus may only work when:

  • the camera is powered on, and
  • the camera is awake/ready to shoot (not sleeping).

Try this first:

  1. Turn the camera on.
  2. Half-press the shutter to wake it up.
  3. Switch the lens/camera to MF if needed.
  4. Turn the focus ring again.

If it still does nothing, test the lens on another compatible Canon APS-C DSLR if possible. If manual focus also fails there, the issue is probably in the lens. If it works on another camera, the problem may be with the body/settings.

So yes—there is something to check before sending it in: make sure the camera is on and awake, since STM manual focus may not respond otherwise.
