Does the Canon 7D sharpness setting affect RAW files, and what sharpness level is best?

On a Canon 7D, does the in-camera sharpness setting change the actual RAW file, or only JPEG output and previews? I notice that setting sharpness to 7 looks artificially sharp when reviewing images, while lower settings look more natural. I usually shoot with a 24-105mm f/4L at 24mm and f/4. Is there a recommended sharpness setting for general use, or is it better to leave sharpening low and do it later in post?

The sharpness setting does not make a difference to the RAW image, but would be applied if you're shooting JPG.

I don't know what setting would be best, but if the range is 0-7 I would think an intermediate value (3 or 4) would be a good starting point.

If you are going to err, I'd err on the side of having less sharpening, because you can always sharpen in post processing.

On the Canon 7D, the in-camera sharpness setting does not change the underlying RAW image data. It mainly affects JPEGs, and it can also influence how the image preview looks in-camera or when first opened in Canon software.

So if you shoot RAW, sharpness at 0 vs 7 won’t permanently alter the RAW file itself. A high setting like 7 can look artificial because sharpening boosts edge contrast and can also emphasize noise and create artifacts.

There isn’t one “best” setting for everyone. For JPEGs, it’s a taste and subject-dependent choice: more sharpening can make edges pop, but too much often looks harsh. A moderate setting such as 2, 3, or 4 is a reasonable starting point, and some users find the 7D looks natural around 3. If unsure, it’s usually safer to use less sharpening in-camera, since you can always add sharpening later in post with more control.
