Can Picasa for Linux open Canon 7D RAW files?

I'm using Picasa 3.0 for Linux on Ubuntu, and Canon 7D RAW files display as thin pink/magenta rectangles instead of proper previews. The Windows version of Picasa reportedly supports this RAW format. Does the Linux version support Canon 7D RAW, and is there any workaround?

The Linux version is only a beta, and google seems to have discontinued updates.

It looks like some people in the picasa for linux user group are having a better time using the windows version installed through wine.

Probably not in the native Linux release. The pink/magenta rectangle behavior is a common sign that Picasa doesn’t correctly support that RAW format, and the Linux version is an old beta that appears to have stopped receiving updates. So even if the Windows version supports Canon 7D RAW, the Linux version may still not.

Workarounds mentioned by users:

  • Run the newer Windows version of Picasa under Wine.
  • Convert the RAW files first with dcraw, which supports the 7D. Using dcraw with -T can create 16-bit TIFFs; otherwise it can generate 8-bit output.
  • Use a native Linux alternative such as Rawstudio, Shotwell, or F-Spot.

So the practical answer is: native Picasa for Linux likely won’t reliably handle Canon 7D RAW files, but Wine or a separate RAW converter/app can solve it.
