I have a Canon 6D and can open its RAW files in Lightroom, but iPhoto says the format is unknown. I’m using an older Mac with OS X 10.8.2 and iPhoto 8.1.2. Apple’s RAW support list suggests the 6D is supported. Is there an additional update or minimum iPhoto version required to make 6D RAW files work in iPhoto?

You need to update your copy of iPhoto to get the update that supports the Canon 6D. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4757 for some detail, especially note that the raw update 4.03 has an asterisk to a note at the bottom: "Aperture version 3.4 or later, or iPhoto version 9.4 or later, is required to install this update."

Yes. The issue is likely your iPhoto version, not the camera or OS alone. Canon 6D RAW support was added through Apple’s Digital Camera RAW update, but that update requires a newer photo app version to install and use it. In particular, support for this update requires Aperture 3.4+ or iPhoto 9.4+.
