Why do some Canon Rebel XSi .CR2 files open in Camera Raw, but RAW+JPEG files do not?

On a Mac running OS X 10.6.8 with Photoshop CS5 and Camera Raw 6.7, some Canon Rebel XSi .CR2 files open normally, but files shot with the camera set to RAW+L (large JPEG) do not open. Files shot with RAW only work fine. Adobe DNG Converter did not help, and Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) and RawTherapee show thumbnails for the problematic files but cannot properly open or convert them. What could cause this, and what should I check?

Hmm. Weird!

Try using DPP with your 'unopenable' raw files. If DPP doesn't open them then there may be something wrong with your camera or memory card.

Have you tried using a different memory card? have you tried shooting tethered w/o a memory card and have the images copied straight to the computer?

This points more to a file or software-compatibility problem than to Camera Raw itself. Since RAW-only files open but RAW+JPEG files do not, the first things to check are:

  1. Canon DPP version compatibility — Make sure you have the DPP version that is correct for your Rebel XSi. An incompatible DPP version may show thumbnails but fail to open/edit certain CR2 files.
  2. File corruption or card issues — If DPP also cannot open the files, the RAW files may be damaged. Try a different memory card and see if the problem repeats.
  3. Test the capture path — If possible, try shooting tethered directly to the computer (without saving to card) to rule out card/write problems.

Because Adobe Camera Raw 6.7 should support XSi RAW files, the most likely causes are either corrupted CR2 files from the card/camera workflow or using the wrong Canon software version. Start by installing the correct DPP release for your camera, then test with another memory card.
